The SPAs are there to protect rare birds including the Dartford warbler, woodlark and nightjar.

It has also been listed as a potential Site of Special Scientific Interest and in June 2006 process for establishing Pewley Down as a Nature Reserve was also started. The main habitats here include grassland and woodland which have been protected by designation as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest. Pewley Down today is an important conservation site and covers 8.5 hectares of chalk downland forming part of the North Downs. However one Guildford resident has a more relaxed view, as his letter written to a local newspaper shows: "I cannot understand why the abundance of potholes causes so much concern.
